Day 16 – Thoughts On Education

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

I won’t be the person I am now without education. I don’t think I will have the capacity to write in the second language and be able to communicate with other people on the other side of the world without education. I wouldn’t be able to teach, influence, and make a difference in the lives of my students. I wouldn’t have the life I have now if not for education.

I am forever thankful to my mother, my first teacher. I can still remember when my mom was helping me read my favorite story book – Snow White and the seven dwarfs. I remember the first song she taught me. She instilled in my mind the importance of education. She taught me to dream and change my life through education.

We were poor and my mom sold meat in a wet supermarket. She didn’t force us to help her during weekends. She just wanted us to study well. I didn’t see and appreciate what my mom was doing for us back then. I know she works hard for us but I was so rebellious when I was a teenager.

I recalled when I was in college, I had a boyfriend and my mom gave me a choice. To continue my studies or continue my relationship with my boyfriend. I chose my studies and I’m glad she made me choose. I could imagine myself impregnated at 19 years old and doing odd jobs. I’m happy I listened and finished my studies. Now I can see all her sacrifices and selflessness. I am grateful for all that she has done.

Real education is not confined to books and classrooms.

My mom not only sent us to school but she made sure that we grow up with good values. She involved us in church and I’m glad she did. Education is not confined to the classroom because I have learned things from the church that I didn’t learn from school. I learned how to be compassionate and kind to others. I learned how to sing, dance, and play instruments. I have fear of socializing with other people but I overcame it and gained a lot of confidence because of my church involvement. I joined every youth camp and activity.

Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.

We make mistakes, we make wrong decisions but if we are able to make sense out of it, evaluate ourselves, recognize our weaknesses, make ways to do better and improve ourselves to have a meaningful and productive life, then we truly learn. We live our life just once, why not live it to the fullest?

To the WP community, thank you for sharing your experiences, your thoughts, and your lives. I learn more everyday because of you.

Mother knows best talaga 🙂 For me, education is really important as well. Some may say that it’s not that important anymore as long as you’re “madiskarte” then will give you a list of college dropouts that are super successful nowadays; but I think it’s also because luck is on their side. But what if luck isn’t on yours? Education is your only key and that’s why it really is important for me. I, thank you. 😂

We all have different talents. Most people who become successful without education are good in business and some are genius. Not all people have inate skills in business nor all are genius. Very well said Amielle!
